DB 10 - How to Develop Bodhicitta
Discovering Buddhism Module 10 - How to Develop Bodhicitta
In this series we will awaken the limitless potential within our minds by learning how to develop the essential qualities needed to become enlightened. There were two lineages taught that showed one how to develop bodhicitta, the 7-point given by Asanga and the equalizing and exchanging of self with other given by Nagrajuna. Lama Tsongkhapa combined these two methods into an 11-point meditation series which we will learn. Each class will include prayers, guided meditations, a teaching and Q & A. Periodically we will include a discussion class as well.
We ask that students show up 10-15 minutes before the class begins at 10 AM as we start promptly with prayers and meditation. This will ensure that participants are not disturbed by people entering the room late.
Please note this is not a drop-in nor an introductory class. To receive the most benefit, it is best to attend the entire series.

Developing the Mind of Definitive Emergence
On this one day retreat participants will engage in four meditations on the 12 interdependent links to strengthen renunciation for our own sufferings. In turn, this will enable us to develop empathy for every sentient beings' suffering. The 12 interdependent links are part of the Wheel of Life seen in many Buddhist Centers and Temples. Buddha taught these 12 links to impress upon our mind the cyclic and uncontrolled nature of samsara. Each session will include pointing out instructions, prayers, guided meditations and dedications.
We ask participants to come 10-15 minutes early to ensure that participants are not disturbed, as we start promptly at 9 AM.

Ornament for Clear Realization
Ornament for Clear Realizations (Abhisamayalamkara)--Chapter Four
These classes focus on key points from the 4th Chapter of Maitreya's Ornament for Clear Realizations (Abhisamayalamkara). From among the many extensive teachings in that chapter, we will particularly focus on the structure of the path that is traveled by bodhisattvas on their journey to full enlightenment which traverses the five paths and ten grounds. We will also look at an elaboration of the Buddha's core teaching on the four noble truths which explores the 16 aspects of those four noble truths. We'll explore a bit about the philosophical underpinnings of the Ornament. And, the majority of our time in this series of classes will involve a deep exploration of the nature and practice of the 3 Harmonies with Enlightenment, which include the 4 Foundations of Mindfulness. We will look at classical teachings on those topics and will also engage in meditations based upon those teachings.
This is not an introductory level subject; it's rather intermediate, tending towards the advanced. To benefit well from these teachings, students should have previous experience studying some of Buddhist philosophy based on the texts of the Indo-Tibetan tradition.

Building your Personal Dharma Tool Kit
Just as we stock a medicine cabinet so it has what we need, we can build a personal Dharma toolkit to help us as circumstances change and problems arise.
As Buddha teaches us, problems in this existence are unavoidable. Out of his great wisdom and compassion, he provided us with the means to deal effectively with these problems and liberate ourselves from suffering.
In this one-day workshop, we'll discuss the problems you are encountering and the specific tools you can use to build your personal toolkit so that you have the resources you need to handle what arises in your life. The Dalai Lama's advice to develop a warm and loving heart, a peaceful mind, and a meaningful life will serve as our steady guideline.
Our goal is to provide down-to-earth, common-sensical ways to relieve suffering. In our workshop, we will use various techniques, including analytical and creative meditations, psycho-emotional imaginative explorations, and the sharing of our common wisdom. Please bring paper (letter-size) and pen. If you love artistic expression, bring colored pencils!

Unique Buddhist Event Dedicated to World Peace & Environmental Healing in DC
Throughout the history of Buddhism in Central and East Asia, Buddhists have done prayers, recitations and the sharing of holy images as part of communal efforts towards peace and environmental healing. On this day, interested members and friends of the Guhyasamaja Center community will gather again to participate in such practices.
Lorne Ladner, PhD has received a number of sacred, "Black Diamond Engraved images of Guru Rinpoche" who was also known as “Padmasambhava”. (Padmasambhava was a Buddhist master from Oddiyana who helped initially bring Buddhism to Tibet). These images were made by a Tibetan lama based on an ancient prophecy for promoting healing and peace in the world. In addition to the image of Padmasambhava, they also have engraved prayers and were intended to be placed in rivers, mountains and lakes all around the world.
At this gathering, we will begin by reciting portions of the Sutra of Golden Light, which has been famous for over a millennium in Central Asia for promoting peace and wise leadership. Then we will do prayers and mantras specifically to Padmasambhava himself. After that, those present who wish to do so will be given time to share their own personal prayers and compassionate aspirations. After that, we will take a short walk to the Arlington Bridge from which we will offer the sacred image of Guru Rinpoche to the Potomac River, thereby joining Buddhist all around the globe who are offering such images to important places in nature to promote compassion, healing and peace.
Rain Date: Saturday, September 20 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm - Check website and email for updates if the weather is questionable.

DB 9 - Samsara And Nirvana
Discovering Buddhism Module 9 - Samsara And Nirvana
This course will present how our dissatisfaction entraps us into a cycle of unwanted experiences and what we can do to overcome this predicament. Students will learn how grasping and craving lead to various disturbing emotions, such as anger, pride, attachment, deluded doubt, ignorance, and jealousy. We will then learn how to apply specific antidotes to these negative states of mind. Students will also learn how to utilize particular meditations to work with these disturbing emotions and, in so doing, experience some inner peace.
We will also explore how this cycle, called Samsara, is presented in the Wheel of Life, a famous Buddhist Painting, that demonstrates through images how we enter this predicament and how we escape it.
We ask participants to please show up 10-15 minutes before each class as we begin with prayers and a guided meditation at 10 AM. This will ensure that others are not disturbed by people entering the room late.
Please note that this is not a drop-in program, nor is it an introductory class. Each class builds on the knowledge from the previous class(es). To receive the most benefit, we recommend that you attend the series.

Classes on the 4th chapter of the Ornament are part of FPMT's Basic Program.
