DB 12 - The Wisdom of Emptiness

Discovering Buddhism Module 12- The Wisdom of Emptiness

The Buddha taught a method to become free from the cycle of suffering called samsara. These essential instructions are teachings on how ourselves, others and all situations we encounter are empty of any true existence. In this course we will look at what this actually means. If we are able to take this to heart we can achieve some inner peace that will result in a permanent cessation of suffering in the future. Participants will also learn what are conventional and ultimate truths and how to engage in different meditations on Emptiness.

We ask that students show up 10-15 minutes before the class begins at 10 AM as we start promptly with prayers and meditation. This will ensure that participants are not disturbed by people entering the room late.

Please note this is not a drop-in nor an introductory class. To receive the most benefit, it is best to attend the entire series.

Shantideva’s Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life

Shantideva’s Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life

Instructions on how to live a life grounded in love and compassion, integrating the path to enlightenment into daily living

H. H. the Dalai Lama has often praised this text as the most important work on living with compassion and cultivating bodhichitta (the altruistic heart intent on awakening for all beings).  The text is a beautiful, often moving, extensive poem in ten chapters.  One of its unique features is that the majority of the text is accessible to newer students (who are deeply interested in living a life of compassion) while also being highly relevant to those who’ve been practicing for a long while.

Retreat: The Wisdom of Emptiness

In this retreat participants will engage in 4 meditations that will deepen their experience of the Emptiness of self and  phenomena. In doing so we can reduce our attachment and cravings that cause suffering for both ourselves and others. Each session will include pointing out instructions, prayers and a guided meditation.

We ask participants to show up 10-15 minutes before as we will start promptly at 9 AM. This will avoid disturbing others. This retreat is suitable for those with experience of Dharma. If you have not taken the Discovering Buddhism module on Emptiness it is recommended you listen to the audio recordings on our website for DB -12.

Tonglen Retreat: Taking and Giving

Tonglen Retreat: Taking and Giving

Tonglen is the practice of taking on others suffering with compassion and giving them happiness with love. Geshe Langri Tangpa wrote in 8 Verses in Training the Mind: "In short, both directly and indirectly, do I offer every happiness and benefit to all my mothers. I shall secretly take upon myself all their harmful actions and suffering." Tonglen is a powerful tool to enable us to exchange our object of cherishing love from self to others.

Each of the 4 meditation sessions will include pointing out instructions, prayers and a guided meditation. This retreat is suitable for practitioners who have some experience of Dharma. If you have not attended the Discovering Buddhism module on Bodhicitta it is recommended that you listen to the audio recording on our website DB -10 How to develop Bodhicitta #6.

We ask participants to show up 10-15 minutes before as we start promptly at 9 AM. This will ensure participants are not disturbed by people entering late.

DB 10 - How to Develop Bodhicitta

Discovering Buddhism Module 10 - How to Develop Bodhicitta

In this series we will awaken the limitless potential within our minds by learning how to develop the essential qualities needed to become enlightened. There were two lineages taught that showed one how to develop bodhicitta, the 7-point given by Asanga and the equalizing and exchanging of self with other given by Nagrajuna. Lama Tsongkhapa combined these two methods into an 11-point meditation series which we will learn. Each class will include prayers, guided meditations, a teaching and Q & A. Periodically we will include a discussion class as well.
