Introductory Classes
Shantideva’s Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life
Instructions on how to live a life grounded in love and compassion, integrating the path to enlightenment into daily living
H. H. the Dalai Lama has often praised this text as the most important work on living with compassion and cultivating bodhichitta (the altruistic heart intent on awakening for all beings). The text is a beautiful, often moving, extensive poem in ten chapters. One of its unique features is that the majority of the text is accessible to newer students (who are deeply interested in living a life of compassion) while also being highly relevant to those who’ve been practicing for a long while.
Please Note: While this is not really a beginner’s level class and may present some unfamiliar material to newer students, all are welcome to these classes who wish to explore Buddhist teachings on living a life of deep engagement with compassion.
This is one of the subjects of FPMT’s Basic Program, so more serious students can commit to attending the majority of the classes (or to watching the recordings if you have to miss some classes) and they can then receive a formal completion certificate for having studied this amazing text. Others are welcome to attend classes on topics of particular interest to them (as there are chapters on topics like patience that decreases anger, mindfully guarding our compassion in daily life, the vast benefits of bodhichitta, and beautiful prayers of generosity.)
This class will meet twice a month, one class being zoom only and one class being hybrid - in person at the center and on zoom, Please check carefully.
Students taking this series of classes as part of the FPMT Basic Program should do their best to abide by Lama Zopa Rinpoche’s “Conduct and Practice Criteria”.
Our current plan is to for two classes per month. They will take place on Saturdays from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm. We plan for half of the classes to be offered in a hybrid format (in-person and via Zoom) and the other half of classes to be offered via Zoom only. (Depending on the interest level of students in each of those class formats, we may adjust to more hybrid or more virtual only as we go along).
If you’d like to receive a PDF of the root text and also receive updates about the classes, please register by emailing Jan Jacobs (the center’s Spiritual Program Coordinator) at spc@guhyasamaja.org In terms of the text, PDF-s of FPMT’s translation as well as some supplementary materials will be made available to any interested student free of charge; you can then use it digitally or print your own copy. That translation will sometimes be supplemented by (and compared to) the translation in the book by Vesna and Allan Wallace entitled A Guide to the Bodhisattva Way of Life, and students who are interested in can purchase a copy of that book as well if they like. (Those taking this full series of classes for a completion certificate are advised to do that.)
One more point about our format: for each chapter there will be a series of classes covering all the verses in that chapter (with opportunities for questions or comments) and then a chance at the end of each chapter for students to share their own inspirations and experiences related to those verses.
